Chemion enhances customer service with robogrind

Chemion Logistik GmbH is celebrating the unveiling of its new robogrind industrial robot on April...

Service from a single source

The investment in the new robot, from Robogrind Oy of Finland, pays off for Chemion in several ways. “The inside walls of the company's roughly 800 tank containers, and above all those of our customers, can now be ground and polished faster, more cost-efficiently and more sparingly,” explains Markus Hartges, head of maintenance at the plant. “Thanks to robogrind, we have optimized processes to benefit our customers and can now offer them cost-efficient services from a single source: from leasing, rinsing and inspecting all the way to maintaining the tank containers.”

High quality promotes a long service life

Another advantage is the high, uniform level of quality: In steps of 2.5 centimeters, the robot grinds the inside walls of a container, eliminating corrosion damage and pitting (small dents caused by corrosion that damage the inside wall). The robot's millimeter accuracy extends the service life of tank containers.

Saving a tremendous amount of time

Gerd Clemens, head of Inbound/Outbound Logistics I, which encompasses Container Logistics, emphasizes the significant amount of time saved by using the robot: “Manually grinding the inside wall of a container takes about 80 to 100 work hours; robogrind does it in 40 hours. Furthermore, by using the robot, we also are taking an important step in improving occupational safety and health for our employees.”

Added value for customers, well-positioned for the future.

Word on the robot's good work has already spread. The demand generated by existing customers as well as other major container service providers is great, and robogrind currently is in non-stop operation. “We are very proud of our investment, which enables us to offer customers added value,” enthuses Managing Director Uwe Menzen. “Chemion has once again proven itself to be a chemistry logistics company that seizes new opportunities and positions itself strategically for the future.”

Chemion Logistik: ten years safe and efficient processes

The service provider Chemion, specialized in location logistics and hazardous goods handling, is...

„For ten years now Chemion as an independent service provider has been providing local logistical services and is as a specialist in dealing with hazardous goods a reliable partner for companies“, according to Uwe Menzen, Managing Director at Chemion Logistik GmbH. In 2001 the company was founded from the sales companies of Bayer AG. From the very beginning the logistics service provider was faced with the challenge of continuing to offer its existing customers high quality and designing its portfolio in such a way that the services are also attractive for companies outside of the Bayer world. Uwe Menzen: „The fact that we have been able to master this challenge in the past decade in which the world of logistics has changed so significantly can mainly be attributed to the Chemion employees. It is their commitment and their professional and process expertise that are Chemion‘s most important resources.“
A brief review at ten years of Chemion and the most important milestones in the company’s history: in the years 2004 until 2007 Chemion extended resp. built new container terminals in Leverkusen and Dormagen. Through this the company extended its storage capacities enormously and since then has counted among the top 10 in German terminal operators. The service provider also invested in the field of equipment management – an important aspect in hazardous goods logistics and extended its equipment pool significantly: today along with 800 tank containers and 2,000 industrial trucks (of which 400 have explosion protection), it also contains, among others, setting tanks, troughs and 100,000 pallets. Together with other partners Chemion has also developed numerous innovative concepts in the last ten years. For example, Schenker Rail with DB, with which the service provider constructed a shunting platform. This makes the CHEMPARK locations more flexibly linked over the tracks in order to be able to provide an extensive range of services in the field of switching services.
In the future also Chemion sees its central task in making a contribution towards its customers’ corporate success with innovative and sustainable concepts. Since from the point of view of the logistics expert, it is the sustainability aspects in particular that have a central value for the economic success of companies, Chemion also made the topic of sustainability the key theme of its expert forum LOG.lev this year, which took place in Leverkusen on 12th and 13th October. Uwe Menzen: „We are convinced that when questioning existing processes with the aim of optimizing them in view of efficiency and costs, interesting starting points for a new process design emerge through which a contribution is simultaneously made towards sustainability.“

Expert forum LOG.lev is dedicated to sustainability

Sustainability – an entrepreneurial challenge! Chemion Logistik put its expert forum LOG.lev...

Sustainability – an entrepreneurial challenge! Chemion Logistik put its expert forum LOG.lev (Logistics live in Leverkusen) under this banner on 12th and 13th October 2011. At the invitation of the logistics service provider, around ninety participants from the chemical and logistics sectors, from science and industry attended the sixth event in the series in Leverkusen. The interdisciplinary concept from the past years has proven itself and thus Chemion was once again able to attract experts from the economy and science for lectures and as an exhibition partner this year. It is this good mixture, which is in the opinion of Elmar Ockenfels, Business Analyst at Chemion Logistik, one of the success factors of LOG.lev. „The event links ideas and specialists and offers a platform for information and exchange. It is particularly on the topic of sustainability that it becomes evident: Together we can achieve more if we are willing to see the big picture.“
The event kicked off with the participants visiting the highly modern plant of nkt cables, which among others has been producing the world’s largest sea cables for the transmission of alternating currents in CHEMPARK Leverkusen since 2010. During the inspection the focus was on activities in the customer centre of the company along with the production lines, which are geared towards quality, future-oriented product design, optimum order processing and also the aspect of environmental friendliness.
The day of the event on 13th October was opened with a welcome speech given by the State Secretary of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dr. Günther Horzetzky. Susanne Bergius from Handelsblatt directed a clear appeal to the audience: sustainability is part of the core business! She demonstrated the risks of non-sustainable economizing for companies, emphasized the challenge for global procurement chains and logistics and showed indicators of a credible reorientation of companies towards sustainability. Ursula Mathar from Bayer AG E&S underlined in her lecture that sustainability contributes towards added value for Bayer. She gave examples illustrating acting responsibly from the fields of ecology, economy and society and explained how Bayer is making a contribution towards solving global challenges with its sustainability program.
In his interactive lecture Prof. Dr. Carsten Suntrop (CMC² GmbH) invited the LOG.lev participants to experience changes themselves and to learn through this how important the topic of sustainability is, especially in change processes. Since companies are living systems, it is important, particularly in phases of change, to actively integrate employees in the organization of change. Only then, concluded Suntrop, can the desired target status of change projects be achieved, only then can companies successfully manage the change.
Dr. Christian Busse from Supply Chain Management Institute (SMI) dedicated himself in his presentation to sustainability in procurement. As an example he portrayed the numerous challenges for a sustainable supply chain management and various tools with which companies can organize their procurements in a more sustainable way: this includes the codes of conduct, which regulate the interaction between companies and their suppliers as codes of conduct, CO2 avoidance strategies and also a sustainability-oriented supply chain risk management.
In his lecture Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Bretzke (Barkawi Management Consultants) concentrated on the necessity of a paradigm change in order to achieve sustainable logistics. His belief: logistics must be raised to the strategy level of companies and leave behind the many current logistical principles in order to be able to be oriented in sustainable way. To this end needs must become more predictable again in future, for example speed should no longer be automatically considered the most important value. Rather consistent simplification, bundling needs, slowing down and a multi-dimensional and longer-term conservation attitude for the sustainable organization of logistics are necessary.

To conclude the LOG.lev Dr. Stefan Rommerskirchen from ProgTrans AG offered the participants a view of the development of the demand for freight traffic and presented the prospects and the ecological consequences of the developments. In Germany and in the European Union domestic traffic retains the most important role, whereby on the road the freight traffic capacity will increase, particularly by 2030. Outside of Europe, such as, for example, in Russia, India and China, the freight traffic capacity will increase enormously in the next two decades due to the rapidly growing economy. The consequence: the competition for scarce fossil energies will be heated up and this will increase the pressure to find alternatives for the current drive energies for road traffic.

Chemion organizes expert forum on the topic of sustainability

On 12th and 13th October 2011 the topic at Chemion will once again be: Experience logistics live in...

„We are convinced that the topic of sustainability is a forward-looking topic with a central value for the economic success of companies, that has to be viewed holistically“, explained Uwe Menzen, managing director of Chemion Logistik. „That is why we have consciously put the focus of LOG.lev on this complex of topics this time. We wish to highlight the various aspects of sustainability at the event though the top-class speakers, and to make a contribution towards drawing attention the topic.“ Chemion is also using this motto to link it to the event last year at which `sustainability in the supply chain` was one of the topics in the round of talks given by the experts to receive a particularly positive feedback from the majority of the approx. 140 participants.
In accordance with the objective of linking experts and ideas and of offering a platform for innovative solution approaches, the series of events LOG.lev is relying on a good mixture of information, discussion and networking. It has already become a tradition: on the agenda of the first day of the event is an outdoor sequence at which the LOG.lev participants cast a glance this year at the production of nkt cables. In the highly innovative plant, which has existed in CHEMPARK Leverkusen since 2010 and bears the name f2c, the largest sea cables in the world, among others, are manufactured to transmit alternating currents. On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, Chemion Logistik has come up with something special to follow the plant tour: the service provider is inviting customers, speakers, partners and journalists to take a ship tour on the MS Jan von Werth from Leverkusen to Cologne, where there will be opportunities to discuss the impressions of the day, to intensify existing contacts and to make new ones.
On the second day of the event on which Martin Willhaus, managing director of the Kühne foundation, will be the presenter, the topic of sustainability will then be examined from various angles: the speakers will present their points of view on sustainability in a concern from the chemical industry, in sourcing activities or in in-company change processes. How will the demand for freight transport services in Germany and Europe develop? How is it possible to succeed in making the sustainability of companies be understood more intensively as a part of their core business? This and other questions will be discussed by the presenters, the experts and participants. Uwe Menzen: „We are convinced that in view of the worldwide resources that are becoming increasingly scarce, a change in the way we think is necessary. Consequently, this will also have an effect on the organization of logistical processes and for this we wish to develop solutions jointly with our customers.“

transport logistic in Munich: Chemion Logistik – competence for partnership

The motto of Chemion Logistik’s exhibition at transport logistic from 10th until 13th May 2011 in...

In hazardous goods logistics in particular a sound knowledge of expertise and processes are necessary in order to be able to develop innovative and future-proof solutions, Ralf Thiesen, Marketing Manager Sales at Chemion Logistik is convinced of this fact. „And also in terms of consultation, competence is in demand. Since each service package must be precisely tailored to the customer’s individual situation and ideally link several service areas with each other.“ It is precisely here that Chemion as a provider of contract logistical solutions specialising in the field of chemicals logistics sees its area of expertise: it is the experience in particular in handling hazardous goods, on the basis of which the service provider can develop overall concepts that does not end at the boundaries of a service or product area. Chemion shows what such solutions could be like on the basis of field-tested solutions at transport logistic in Munich.
If not only the transport process itself is considered but if the services that take place at the location before or after the transport are also included in the optimisation consideration, new perspectives are often opened up. The consideration of the whole service chain can reveal new approaches and options for action. If loading and unloading, shunting work and expeditionary processing are integrated in the process of rail transport and all services are controlled from one source, this leads to efficient interface management and to a clearly reduced need for coordination on the part of the customer. Also on the topic of „transport planning“ Chemion shows how comparatively small changes can lead to impressive results: if the planning of transports is carried out at an early stage and orders can therefore be made earlier, bundling or the use of alternative carriers are possible through longer lead times for the transports. Since speed is then no longer the all decisive factor for the transport, there is often no longer the necessity to process the transfer of the goods as spot transports via road. Instead of this rail or ship transports can be attractive alternatives. In the case of such solutions it then becomes apparent: profitability and environmental compatibility are not diametrically opposed! Solutions can really be developed and implemented with the aim of process optimisation, offering an added value at the same time from an economic point of view as well as in environmental terms.
A holistic approach and integrated overall concepts are essential factors for success even in procurement logistics. Therefore Chemion supports companies in importing and exporting goods in the European Union and accompanies them from the acceptance of the products at international ports to interim storage, finishing and packing up to the further distribution to the recipients. On the last mile the service provider produces physical services itself; the infrastructure of the CHEMPARK locations is thereby an important aspect. Ralf Thiesen: „In order to be able to consistently organise import processing for companies and to be able to guarantee professional handling of the goods at each point along the supply chain, Chemion cooperates with competent partners from special fields.“ The consequence: companies get individual complete service in their procurement logistics, with which the various individual services are controlled centrally, and they can use Chemion’s efficient network for their purposes.

Chemion: trend in short term forklift rentals continues / rental service improving

Despite the positive economic trend, Germany’s companies are slow to invest in forklift equipment....

Despite the positive economic trend, Germany’s companies are slow to invest in forklift equipment. This means, of course, that the short term rental business is booming.
“Companies are still reticent when it comes to investing”, remarks Gerd Clemens, director of production resources management at Chemion, Germany’s leading lessor of explosion-proof industrial trucks (EX forklifts). “We have observed that either older equipment is being used for longer, or additional equipment is rented on a short term basis.
Every tenth unit ordered from Chemion by its customers comes under the “short-term rental” category, a defined period of time, which may be anything from 24 hours up to one year. “The average rental period is 120 days”, reports Clemens.
The fleet management professional from Leverkusen doesn’t merely see the advantage of short-term rentals in terms of financial flexibility (which is the obvious factor in favor of renting). What’s more important for customers is the flexibility of being able to choose from a range of units, and therefore always having access to exactly the right equipment needed. At Chemion, the most popular industrial trucks for renting purposes are EX forklifts, stackers and gas forklifts.
“These days, our customers are after all-inclusive packages, with which they can react quickly and easily to the requirements of their own customers”, adds Clemens. This includes a comprehensive service package which is also included in the price of the short term rental. With the exception of fuel, everything is included in Chemion’s rental deals. Within 48 hours, Chemion will deliver the units ordered to anywhere in Germany.
However, the industrial truck provider Chemion has observed that, with the growing demand for rental units, there has been an increase in the intensity of advice and service required. Clemens notes, “Particularly when it comes to ex-proof offers, customers expect extensive trade know-how and absolute professionalism. In sensitive areas where explosions are a major hazard, customers are leaving nothing to chance.”
With a pool of 400 EX forklifts, Chemion Logistik is one of Germany’s leading providers of rental equipment for ex-proof applications. The entire fleet is made up of more than 2,000 industrial trucks. As one of the exhibitors at CeMAT
(May 02 - 06, 2011 in Hanover), Chemion will be presenting its latest range of ex-proof units, not to mention its complete rental program (Stand K29, Hall 26).
About Chemion
The industrial truck division is an important aspect of equipment and service management, one of the main services offered by Leverkusen-based Chemion Logistik GmbH. Chemion is Germany’s leading lessor and operator of industrial trucks for areas subject to explosion hazards and has worked as industrial truck pool operator for Bayer AG for over 20 years. As central fleet manager, the company also launched a comprehensive range of services in 1999 aimed at other industrial utility and specialist vehicles.
With its focus on resource management, the Chemion fleet management division is responsible for the fleets of leading companies across Germany. Since its launch as a spin-off from the Bayer Group in 2001, Chemion Logistik GmbH has offered customers in its capacity as a 3PL (third party logistics provider) customised logistics solutions, fleet management among them. With its 1,000-strong workforce, Chemion Logistik GmbH generated 122 million euros in turnover in 2010. With offices in Leverkusen, Dormagen, Krefeld and Duisburg, the company ensures its customers remain mobile and their logistics run smoothly – whatever the location.

Pointing the compass towards the customers

Chemion Logistik is investing in the topic of customer service

Improving customer orientation and being successful together with the customer – this is the motto under which Chemion has placed two projects simultaneously: via a customer portal the logistics service provider is offering companies the chance to get transparent overviews about services rendered at the click of a mouse and to prepare individual evaluations. In order to anchor the topic of customer orientation even more firmly in the services, 160 Chemion employees have been intensively analyzing their services in a series of training courses and are viewing these from the customer’s perspective.
„Transparency with contracts, service packages and workflows plays an important role for the customer’s business as well as for that of the service provider“, according to Ralf Thiesen, Head of Marketing and Sales at Chemion Logistik GmbH. „Since in view of an increasing complexity in logistics and the high dynamics on the markets, companies and service providers are equally challenged to make quick decisions and to develop their business further.“ And that is why Chemion set up a customer portal in 2010 making the services and processes they have received transparent for the customers and enabling them obtain current daily evaluations. Irrespective of where and when the companies are, they can log into the portal by entering their password and, for example, issuing new orders in the fields of container logistics and transport. The stocks of containers, their movements on site as well as the status of post-courier-express and package-consignments to Chempark locations can be seen on the basis of container resp. internal dispatch numbers. Ralf Thiesen: „We will be continuously further developing the portal this year and integrating new functionalities until the whole service spectrum of Chemion is covered there in the last stage of expansion.“
Compass: customer orientation with passion
The prerequisite of a good all-round service which satisfies the customer from A to Z is the integrated orientation of services to meet the customer’s requirements. Out of this conviction a good 160 Chemion staff have been dedicating themselves to the topic of service since the middle of 2010 in a customized series of training courses going over several days and bearing the name “Compass - Customer orientation with Passion“. The basis for the training concept, which Chemion developed together with an external institute, was a customer satisfaction analysis. It showed which places in the process chain held optimization potential and gave impulses for the orientation of the further training in terms of content. The Chemion colleagues were divided into ten groups and developed various options on the basis of practical examples in order to design the customer care provided by the logistician in an even more proactive way. In so doing a balanced mix of participants from various fields, locations and hierarchies in the groups ensured that the training courses led to positive networking. The professional point of view of the participants is compared in the training sessions directly from the perspective of the service recipient, which is portrayed by representatives from client companies. This enables solutions to be developed when analyzing services and processes which suit the customers as well as the service provider. The workshop participants consider this factor to be decisive for the success of the training courses, as the feedback Ralf Thiesen receives from his colleagues has shown. „It is this combination of service provider and customer viewpoints in particular from which we draw valuable conclusions for our daily work and are able to adjust our service, which represents a great opportunity for every service provider.“

LANXESS is expanding its business relationship with Chemion Logistik

LANXESS is extending an existing logistics contract with Chemion: in the next five years the...

LANXESS is extending an existing logistics contract with Chemion: in the next five years the service provider will continue to do the on-site transport of high-tech plastics from production at the Krefeld site as well as the storage and removal of the materials for the specialty chemicals company. With the extension of the contract LANXESS is also transferring the operation of a new warehouse as well as an open storage space on site to Chemion.
„It is extremely important for us that the on-stock transports of our products undergo a smooth transition to production and that the materials are handled reliably and competently“, according to Detlef Broenen, Manager of Bottling of Semi-Crystalline Products BLAM MF at Lanxess. „Therefore, Chemion’s excellent knowledge of the local conditions in Chempark as well as its experience in dealing with sensitive goods are important criteria for us deciding in favour of continuing and expanding our business relationship.“ The specialty chemicals concern has already been working together with Chemion Logistik for several years now and has commissioned the service provider with carrying out the on-site transport of the plastics at the Krefeld location, including the storage and removal of the materials in general cargo storage. Chemion transports over 100,000 pallets annually between the production buildings and the warehouses and coordinates the storage and removal processes for LANXESS, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Both companies have now agreed by contract to continue their cooperation for further five years. In addition to its current services, Chemion will operate a newly built warehouse as well as an open depot for LANXESS.
As semi-crystalline plastics, Polyamide Durethan and Polyester Pocan are mainly used for technical applications; in recent years LANXESS has constantly increased the production of these products. On the one hand, an extension of the existing storage capacities became necessary as a result of this: LANXESS decided to build a new warehouse with capacities totalling around 4,000 pallet spaces, which is located in the direct vicinity of the production plant and the Chemion warehouses at the Krefeld location. As is already the case in its own two warehouses, Chemion also provides additional services along with storage and removal in the LANXESS hall: upon the customer’s request, pallets are rearranged in the warehouse, product samples are taken, goods repalletised and wrapped in foil for the further transport to the customer’s premises. Chemion also takes on the task of the administrative processing of shipping orders and loading the goods on trucks including load securing. On the other hand, the increase in production quantities led to other precautions becoming necessary for the on-site transports, which enable an efficient handling of the excess quantities. The use up to now of rigid trucks with trailers, which bridged the distance between production and warehouses, had been tried and tested for the current transports, however was not ideal for the larger product quantities. In this respect investments were made in automated loading and unloading by means of shuttle technology. Now the products are transported from production to the warehouses by means of a special vehicle. The vehicle comprises a traction machine and a box trailer and can be automatically loaded from the rear. The special vehicle enables the loading and transport processes to become even more efficient. Dirk Braun, account manager for LANXESS at Chemion, is pleased about the trust LANXESS is placing in Chemion with the contract extension and the transfer of additional tasks. „We will do our utmost to support LANXESS with all processes to do with the handling of these high-tech plastics.
