Leverkusen | January 18, 2007: Chemion Logistik lays Cornerstone for New Container Terminal
Chemion Logistik has laid the cornerstone for a new container terminal in the Chemical Park Dormagen, Germany, creating the prerequisites for further expansion of its container business. In the months to come, 360 storing sites for 20’ box and tank containers will be developed on the hazardous goods site, sized about 7,000 square meters. In compliance with the highest safety standards, the terminal is designed to serve the needs of the growing container business in the chemical industry and will be available to both on-site and off-site companies.
„Our investment in the hazardous goods terminal strengthens our presence on the Dormagen site and sets course for continuous growth in the container business“, says Andreas Hardt, CEO of Chemion Logistik GmbH. Over the past three years to the end of 2007, Chemion will have invested about 15.5 million Euros in modern container technology and the expansion of container storage capacity. „For us, building the new Dormagen terminal marks the next consequential step in our response to the global boom in container traffic and to the increasing demand for storage and handling capacities at our sites.“
The new container terminal plays an important role not only for Chemion’s business but, as stresses the Chemical Park´s site Manager, Dr. Walter Leidinger, also „…contributes to increasing the site’s competitiveness. The optimization of the infrastructure will ultimately benefit all companies on the site. The new terminal will also increase the attractiveness of the Chemical Park Dormagen for future relocation”, adds Leidinger.
With a storage capacity of 1,400 TEU (Twenty-feet Equivalent Units) for box and tank containers, Chemion Logistik ranked seventh amongst the operators of container terminals in Germany last year. When the new Dormagen facility is inaugurated in the second half of 2007, the company will have increased its storage space for internationally standardized steel containers by 360 units. Particularly in the chemical industry, the significance of the container for the safe storage, handling and shipping of hazardous goods is becoming more important. Being a logistics specialist for the chemical and related industries, Chemion has therefore designed the new terminal as a hazardous goods storage facility. Layout and equipment of the facility closely follows the design concept of the Leverkusen Chemical Park terminal which began operations in 2004: It is equipped with a remote controlled gantry crane which spans order-picking and storage areas and, with its program-controlled units, meets the highest of technical standards. A high level of safety is further ensured by a film-coated tank construct, the online wastewater analysis, an early-warning fire detection system and a semi-stationary fire extinguishing installation. As with the Leverkusen sister facility, the terminal in Dormagen will go through a formal licensing procedure in accordance with the provisions of the German Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). As a result, all substances requiring adherence to the highest safety standards will be permitted to be stored at the Dormagen facility, too.
Chemion Logistik GmbH was founded in 2001 as an independent subsidiary of Bayer AG. Today, it is affiliated with Bayer Industry Services GmbH & Co. OHG.
