Leverkusen | February 10, 2011: LANXESS is expanding its business relationship with Chemion Logistik
LANXESS is extending an existing logistics contract with Chemion: in the next five years the service provider will continue to do the on-site transport of high-tech plastics from production at the Krefeld site as well as the storage and removal of the materials for the specialty chemicals company. With the extension of the contract LANXESS is also transferring the operation of a new warehouse as well as an open storage space on site to Chemion.
„It is extremely important for us that the on-stock transports of our products undergo a smooth transition to production and that the materials are handled reliably and competently“, according to Detlef Broenen, Manager of Bottling of Semi-Crystalline Products BLAM MF at Lanxess. „Therefore, Chemion’s excellent knowledge of the local conditions in Chempark as well as its experience in dealing with sensitive goods are important criteria for us deciding in favour of continuing and expanding our business relationship.“ The specialty chemicals concern has already been working together with Chemion Logistik for several years now and has commissioned the service provider with carrying out the on-site transport of the plastics at the Krefeld location, including the storage and removal of the materials in general cargo storage. Chemion transports over 100,000 pallets annually between the production buildings and the warehouses and coordinates the storage and removal processes for LANXESS, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Both companies have now agreed by contract to continue their cooperation for further five years. In addition to its current services, Chemion will operate a newly built warehouse as well as an open depot for LANXESS.
As semi-crystalline plastics, Polyamide Durethan and Polyester Pocan are mainly used for technical applications; in recent years LANXESS has constantly increased the production of these products. On the one hand, an extension of the existing storage capacities became necessary as a result of this: LANXESS decided to build a new warehouse with capacities totalling around 4,000 pallet spaces, which is located in the direct vicinity of the production plant and the Chemion warehouses at the Krefeld location. As is already the case in its own two warehouses, Chemion also provides additional services along with storage and removal in the LANXESS hall: upon the customer’s request, pallets are rearranged in the warehouse, product samples are taken, goods repalletised and wrapped in foil for the further transport to the customer’s premises. Chemion also takes on the task of the administrative processing of shipping orders and loading the goods on trucks including load securing. On the other hand, the increase in production quantities led to other precautions becoming necessary for the on-site transports, which enable an efficient handling of the excess quantities. The use up to now of rigid trucks with trailers, which bridged the distance between production and warehouses, had been tried and tested for the current transports, however was not ideal for the larger product quantities. In this respect investments were made in automated loading and unloading by means of shuttle technology. Now the products are transported from production to the warehouses by means of a special vehicle. The vehicle comprises a traction machine and a box trailer and can be automatically loaded from the rear. The special vehicle enables the loading and transport processes to become even more efficient. Dirk Braun, account manager for LANXESS at Chemion, is pleased about the trust LANXESS is placing in Chemion with the contract extension and the transfer of additional tasks. „We will do our utmost to support LANXESS with all processes to do with the handling of these high-tech plastics.
